North American History of Mahindra®

The Mahindra company got its start in India in 1945. Since their start, they’ve risen above expectations and created a global reputation. Our team at Enlow Tractor Auction is excited to share a brief history of Mahindra’s brand presence in North America.

Growth During WWII

In 1947, Mahindra expanded its reach by accepting a contract to build the WWII Willys vehicles. This opportunity allowed them to gain traction and find ways to expand their reach as India gained independence. 

An International Harvester Collaboration

By 1963, most North American farmers knew the International Harvester brand well. Mahindra was able to collaborate with this well-known company to manufacture tractors in India that displayed the Mahindra badge. This partnership opened many doors for the company, and just over 20 years later, the first Mahindra tractors were introduced to the American market.

Official Establishment of Mahindra USA, Inc.

When the first Mahindra tractors were brought to the United States in 1988, it took several years and hard work to introduce them to dealerships around the nation. Although the brand had become the best-selling tractor in India years prior, Mahindra USA was not established until 1994. 

The official beginnings took place in Tomball, TX, with the help of a man named Rip Evans. He traveled across the U.S. to personally speak with different sellers to introduce them to the benefit of the Mahindra brand.

Putting Down Roots

Throughout the early 2000s, Mahindra was able to gain traction within the American market allowing the company to put down roots across the country. They began building distribution centers and by 2011, the North American headquarters were established in Houston, TX. 

The Mahindra brand continues to grow and gain popularity in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Brazil. They’ve been able to emphasize a global mindset while focusing on the local needs of their customers.
